I should have mentioned the Scottish teams in Europe this week and how various of my friends are willing each one to win and the others to lose. Firstly respect to Russell alias the Tomahawk Kid who as I type is in Madrid supporting Aberdeen on a lost cause. Commiserations to my pals Stevie and Craig who will be cursing Rangers luck on Tuesday against Stuttgart when it looked as if they were good for a point. Stevie it is fair to say would not be supporting Celtic last night or indeed Aberdeen tonight as he refers to both these sides somewhat affectionately as "they bastards". And finally congratulations to Davie who will still be cock-a-hoop at Celtic's last gasp winner against Shakthar Donetsk last night. One thing you can be sure of is that when Celtic are involved the game's not finished until the ref blows his whistle. Davie it was who at the final whistle at Parkhead when his team had just beaten Rangers, phoned Craig and just held the phone up to the noise!
Ah the glamour. In other news in the cup draw today Dumbarton got St Mirren away. So that's that then!
This humble little corner of the Internet normally has between twenty and seventy curious souls passing through each day. The exception has been when I did a couple of daft songs for which I posted the link to the Scottish Football site Pie and Bovril and it zoomed up to 150 per day for a short time. However last night a strange thing happened. Suddenly I'm getting hundreds of visitors from all over the world looking in on the story I did about the AC Milan goalkeeper Dida being unable to continue in the World Tig Championships after his horrific injury against Celtic when a fan "assaulted" him. It turns out that if you search on google for Tig Championships this blog is either the first or second answer. So I assume that there are a lot of information hungry tig enthusiasts out there or more than likely someone has posted the link to the story somewhwere else. For whatever reason nice to have made your acquaintance folks and please feel free to look in again sometime.
Thanks Martin for the original story!
AC Milan keeper Dida was tonight ruled out of the World Tig Championships following a horror injury sustained at Celtic Park Glasgow. Dida who was in the running for the top spot in the WTC was struck down by a gifted unknown from Glasgow. The amateur tig player cornered Dida between two posts and a net and managed to tig him and shout "You're it" before making a clean get away. Dida attempted to tig him back but was unable to catch the nimble young man .
What is it about Scottish fooball just now? After back to back Scotland victories against France and Rangers brushing aside Lyon last night, tonight at Celtic Park the home side overcame AC Milan who just happen to be the European Champions! Celtic never gave up chasing the winner and Scott McDonald blasted it with a minute of normal time left. One sour note was one idiot encroaching the field of play and "assaulting" the Italian goalkeeper. I say assault it wouldn't even count as a slap but the Italian predictably crumbled like a sack of spuds and had to be stretchered off.
Another magnificent night for Scottish football. Dare we begin to imagine a final appearance or even a trophy from one of the Old Firm in Europe? or am I just taking it too far?
Edit: Rumours are now surfacing that Celtic may be deducted the points for the actions of the one brainless wee ned supporter. I sincerely hope this isn't the case. Probably a small fine for Celtic and a one season ban for the Italian keeper would be fairer.
As a football fan in Scotland I have to mention last night's magnificent, nay incredible result for Rangers (3-0) against Lyon in the Champions League. Walter Smith has worked a small miracle since returning to Ibrox and inheriting a dispirited mediocre squad from his much vaunted but short-lived predecessor Paul Le Guen. He is a master tactitian and it is good to see Scottish footballers and Scottish managers at Scotland's big two clubs making their mark again. This along with Scotland's fantastic performance in the Euro 2008 qualifiers bodes well for the future.
The Rangers fans too seem to be learning not to sing the songs which upset the sensitive wee souls in the media and UEFA.They would however do well to stop all the nonsense about Jock Stein it's neither big or clever. What was funny was their song last night "Are you watching Paul Le Guen?"
Lets hope that Celtic can complete the double for Scots clubs tonight with a victory over the mighty AC Milan. Now that really would send out a message to the rest of Europe.
Poor old John Reid. The death knell sounded on his political career when his arch enemy Gordon Brown was elected Labour Party Leader.
Now we hear he is to take on the job as Chairman of Celtic F.C. The chairman and chief executive at 'Paradise' traditionally get a hard time from the 'Greatest Fans In The World' and it will be interesting to see how they react to Reid's well documented abrasive style.
Reid seems unperturbed and I hear he celebrated his new appointment at that well known Glasgow eaterie The Ubiquitous Chip on the Shoulder.
